Neurosurgery at UPMC

The Department of Neurological Surgery at UPMC was founded more than 60 years ago with a strong commitment to patient care, education, and research—a commitment that continues today. With 35 physicians and more than 20 practice locations in Pittsburgh and the tri-state region, our department is the largest neurosurgical academic provider in the United States, performing more than 8,000 major procedures annually.

Leadership & Innovation in Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery

Our physicians are pioneers in their field, developing new techniques and tools in brain, spine, and peripheral nerve care. Within our department, a number of minimally invasive brain, spine, and vascular treatments have been pioneered and refined, offering new hope to patients with complex brain, skull base, and spine disorders. UPMC neurosurgeons treat a wide range of brain and spinal cord conditions with minimally invasive surgery that preserves sensitive tissue, reduces risk of disfigurement and disabilities, and can shorten recovery periods to as little as 24 to 48 hours. In addition, we provide advanced training courses for the medical community at home and abroad.

UPMC Nationally Recognized for Neurosurgery

UPMC is ranked among the top hospitals in the U.S. for Neurosurgical and Neurological Care by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, the Department of Neurological Surgery is ranked among the highest in the country in NIH funding, a benchmark of the success and quality of our department's research. At UPMC, more than 40 faculty members and investigators study the causes and cures of neurological disease and translate their research into life-enhancing practices.

Collaboration

Our neurosurgical team takes a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to evaluating and managing patients with brain and spine conditions. Surgeons from various disciplines, anesthesiologists, radiologists, neurologists, critical care physicians, and nurse coordinators all work closely together to ensure that each patient receives the best care.
